Deacon William Holton was one of the first settlers of Hartford, Connecticut, and one of the eight original petitioners for liberty to plant and settle at Nonotuck (Northampton), whither he went in 1653. When the first board of magistrates was appointed in 1665 by the General court, it consisted of William Holton, Thomas Bascom and Edward Elmore. He was the first deacon of the church of Northampton (ordained June 13, 1663), and a representative to the General court (1667-69).
